Playing Pretend
Maybe we can go to open houses
of homes we can never afford
and pretend to really care
about the floor plan,
and the lack of a kitchen island,
and how the front stairs need a new banister.

And we’ll talk about
where to put the baby’s crib
even though we won’t be parents for another ten years,
or maybe ever.

And we’ll laugh and laugh
at how clever we are
to be acting all grown up,
but we will forget that
we are already grown.
